GETTING
HERE
After a
week of being a bridesmaid in two weddings (one in LA), finals, packing and
moving out of my apartment … I flew to NYC and started my internship!
After a
near-death experience taxi ride from JFK (because every taxi experience is slightly
life-risking) I have arrived at my new home, which happens to be a
dorm. It’s like living in Helaman Halls again … but with boys down the hall ... and a pub in the basement! On another note, I have the best view out my
window!
I met
up with some friends and headed over to Columbus Circle for a fireside at the LDS temple. After the meeting we walked down the street for crepes. I totally had nostalgic-flashback to daily crepe runs in France--the best.
THE
XO GROUP INC.
Today was the first day of my internship with the XO Group Inc.
And probably one of my favorite days, ever.
I have
finally mastered the subway (and by that I mean I made it to work by myself
without being mugged, having an emotional breakdown, or trailing closely behind my friends leading me every step of the way)
The XO
offices are in the financial district on Broadway. I’m quite obsessed with
architecture and immediately fell in love with the building. For those of you that have been in the Rockefeller building, it’s very similar.
Jennie
Mah, is the fashion editor for XO…and my newest
inspiration. Jennie gave me a tour of the office from the design boards and spreads, to the fashion closet and the kitchen packed with tea, whole
foods snacks, and…cereal—wait, was this place made for me?
The
office is open, dominantly white, and complete with huge windows with views of
several bridges and buildings. I already have a few favorite spots for views of
the city, one being a window against my desk.
(Probably won't be appropriate to sneak my own pictures for a while but this is the kitchen space,
a little feel for the design)
For my first task,
I picked out classic, romantic, and modern menswear including cuff
links, ties, shoes, glasses, pocket squares, and belts. If you have any insights on how men's glasses or belts can be romantic, please share...
Jennie
and I went to lunch together. We walked to the ports and got Thai food at an
underground restaurant. She gets married this summer at a château in France …
watch out for her wedding in The Knot’s Real Weddings soon! When we
got back I organized the fashion closet and went through gowns, suits, and
shoes from multiple designers. The closet is like The Devil Wears Prada in real life.
I sat
in on a production meeting with all of the editors including the
editor-in-chief (we were totally wearing the same shoes, score). I was really
inspired by the writing, design, and app ideas being discussed.
After work
I met up with the BYU-Communications group at the Brooklyn Bridge where we ate
Grimaldi’s pizza by the water. I love this city and really look forward to the
next few months here!
